Subverting MySpace and Facebook Blocks With Proxies

In November I blogged about Pope John XXIII Regional High School in Sparta New Jersey and their forcing of students to stop using sites like MySpace, Xanga, and Facebook. Over the past few months I have seen a number of comment come in regarding…well…not threats from schools, but blocking of such sites by educational institutions. Now, its important to note that the blocking of these social sites seem to be localized to Elementary and High Schools, not higher education institutions.

Blocking social sites like this has been met with heavy opposition by those users that are directly affected by such blocks. Lets face it. The web is extremely social and is growing more so as time progresses. My friend, Zach mentions (via our mutual friend Casey):

There are 3,975 registered [Facebook] users at Plymouth State University. Like the other schools on [Facebook], over 60% of them log in every 24 hours.

This type of following is not localized to just universities. The hordes of students frequenting these sites is truly amazing. To get an idea about how much High School students seem to be attached to social sites such as this, I’ll bring up the following article I found at WOAI via Wikipedia.

All but 400 of the 3,000 students at San Antonio Warren High School either didn’t show up or walked out of class today due to threats against the school posted on a popular teen web site, 1200 WOAI news reported today.

“About mid morning today we were able to confirm that the web site ‘MySpace-dot-com’ allowed several students to post threatening messages on it’s web site, messages threatening Warren High School,” Pascual Gonzales of the Northside School District said. “This message said two boys were planning to show up at school with guns.”

That example is not only a testament to the numbers of users, but both the benefits and the the drawbacks of such software. MySpace and similar sites help fuel the passing of information and breaks down social barriers…which is a great thing! But what the schools and many parents are seeing is that many people feel secure in the sites’ use and tend to post fairly revealing bits of information (e.g. provocative photos, under-aged drinking, etc). Schools attempt to stop this kind of behavior by forcefully blocking the sites. Wrong move, it teaches the students nothing. It causes them to continue to participate in posting risque information, blissfully ignorant of the damage it can cause to their reputation and/or the danger it poses to them due to stalkers. To subvert the blocks schools create, students are resorting to the use of Proxies.

These proxies allow users to browse sites under the guise of other sites’ addresses. Since the onset of schools blocking sites, there have been an eruption on proxy sites; free, signup required, ad fueled, etc. If you are curious what is being used by students, here are some that a few have posted here at Borkweb:

There are a crap ton more out there…simply search for myspace proxy or facebook proxy.

If you are student reading this (or anyone else for that matter), be careful what you post. Whatever goes on sites like that, its not closed to the outside world…It’s extremely public information. If you aren’t a student, well, its important to know that attempting to force students in a direction by brute force, it’ll cause them to long for it even more. Instead…educate, don’t dictate.

Another odd thing that seems to be heavily searched is hacking facebook and hacking myspace. A spin off from the heavy usage of such software and the goals of mischievous to deface/defame others’ profile. This I just don’t get.

  12. oops….

i would like to know how sophisticated facebook ip logs are. if one goes through a proxy server, will it log just the proxy ip or will it get the originating ip as well?

When fully proxied via CGIProxy / PHProxy Facebook will only record the IP address of the proxy server, and cannot obtain the originating IP.

That’s the whole privacy idea behind a Facebook proxy, MySpace proxy, etc.

I am so sick and tired of teenagers thinking that it is their God given right to be able to access anything that is available on the net. I think it is appalling that teens think they should be able to access MySpace at school. School is for learning and learning alone. School is not meant to be fun, it meant for learning and understanding what a student needs to know in order to succeed in the future. When my son first starting using MySpace, I tried to simply monitored the amount of time he spent on the internet and tried to be reasonable when it came to letting him use the home pc for activities not related to school. However, as time went on, I discovered that he was spending more and more time socializing on the internet, looking at porn, gambling, and other inappropriate websites, and downloading potentially damaging software and files to my computer. I talked until I was blue in the face about not accessing inappropriate websites and he continued to do it anyway. So unfortunately, I had to resort to spying and monitoring my son’s activities while on the internet. I did not want to have to go there, but my son gave me no choice. I agree that the parent is the one responsible for ensuring their child/children are not accessing inappropriate websites or spending excessive amounts of time on the internet. However, teenagers are at age where they should realize which websites are appropriate and which sites are inappropriate. I have come to the realization that sometimes the parents need to spy and monitor their children. Teens need to realize that most parents are not objecting to MySpace because of a news report, but because they are concerned about the content and/or amount of time being spent on the internet. My son may not be happy that I monitor what he accesses on the internet or monitor how much time he spends accessing the internet, but when more time is spent on internet and less time is spent on studying and/or completing homework assignments then he must suffer the consequences. The degree to which I monitor his internet usage is directly portional to how he is doing in school and how much time is being spent on school work. If his grades are good and he is doing the best at school, then I am a little more flexible when it comes to the internet. However, there will always be sites that I will not allow him to see as long as he remains under my roof.

I think their are a lot of parents who do not realize what their teens are doing and they need to wake up and take a more active role in their teen’s life. I think that more effort should be put forth when it comes to setting boundaries, restrictions, and rewards. Parents would be more open to allowing their teen more privileges, if the teen did what was required of them when it comes to school and home. I think a lot of parents are trying to be friends with their children, when they should be the parent and not worry whether or not their teen likes it or not. I tell my son I am not here to be his friend, but I am here to be his mother and I want the best for him. Deep down, I know he knows that everything that I have ever done has only been in his best interest.

  16. yea….none of these sites work…because they all contain proxies in them….does anyone know a site that works that we dont have to use proxy?

  19. i think its pretty pathetic that you people are immature enough to argue about things like this and scream and whine about not being able to use myspace at school. deal with it, acting like youre 2 years old is not going to allow you to use it at school. end of story

  20. yea i wasnt to get on my space

  26. Ok well to start out i would like to say that i need a proxy because my school has every proxy known to man kinda blocked! so if you have any proxies could you please let me know email me at [email protected] thanks…

  27. i love it becaused it help me to get to myspace

  28. http://wallpass.net works, they just added a proxy that works for myspace, you have to use the link at the top.

  29. I know you guys see proxy sites on here all the time, but this one has one main advantage – the ability to watch youtube videos. It also serves as another option to surf any other site that may be blocked by your school, work, or even country. I was totally surprised when I checked it out. Figured I’d at least pass it on. Don’t forget to digg it :)

  30. Do you think that you can give me a website to get on myspace from school? And if you think that myspace just pisses off people, then you can take it up with me. Because the only ones to blame are the ones that put all that stupid shit on there. So don’t be taking it out on the inoccent.

oh yeah. one more thing. if ur it guy has logged on to ur comp and ur running windows, all passes are stored in the SAM file (encrypted of course). What u need is a decompiler and an anagram dictionary.(working on finding those).

Some schools use there own proxy servers that have a blacklist of sites. if u could somehow hack the blacklist…

    well you get the idea.

look, i agree with 95% of what most of you are saying,
we should have thr right to use myspace and ect sites, but we arreee at school to learn,
    just…feel for me on this.
IM at a boarding school, where everything is blocked 24/7.
meaning, i can’t just cheak my myspace after school or whatever, i never can.
    everything is blocked.
so most of you, suck it up.
    get a life.
    and get me a website.

  34. Here is a proxy that works the best. http://www.iptwist.com is better because it lets you browse all pictures on myspace after you log in. The others just croak after one page of pics.

  35. i need to get on facebook to talk to people\

  36. Here is a great one http://www.facebookfirewall.com
Unlike other ones you can post comments and stuff with this one. Works great at work! I find them on this site called http://www.facebookproxies.org they release a new 1 like every week.

  37. well guys..i hate to say it but i have tried every website i can think of and my school has blocked everything..i think we are just going to have to deal with the fact that stupid schools block it…it really does suck and i hate to admit it but its true..:(

  45. Hello, heard.breaker, i think too!

  46. Emanla Eraton wrote the text in the specially formatted block.

You guys suck. You really aren’t as smart as you think you are, just deal with it. You always think your so great, you aren’t. Stop acting like adults don’t know anything about social life these days. They’ve been to school already, they know. Sure, they might not have used or had computers and modern technology, but they still faced a lot of peer pressure from friends and authority from adults. They have experience.
You always complain that adults don’t understand, and that you need freedom and individuality. Lets take this for example. If a school wants you to wear uniforms, you guys complain that it takes away your individuality and freedom. Does it really? No. You can wear your own clothes outside of school, but when you go to school, you go to school to learn. Not to go on Myspace or Facebook or Friendster, whatever site you use. Not to complain about the rules. Not to get around the security by proxying your way to Myspace. You go to school to learn. Not to get your cellphones confiscated, and then complain and bad-mouth the adults. To learn.
You may think I am some old idiot that doesn’t understand this generation of internet-users. I am actually going to 11th grade. I have used Myspace before. I have gotten around school computer security before. I am no stranger to the Internet. If you lie to the registration form, you are only lying to yourself. Saying your 30 when your birthdate is on your profile, and it clearly shows your not 30 not only mens your lying, but your stupid.
Parents do this for your own good. You may think that they are blocking your freedom and are stupid, but they aren’t. It is a privilege to use the Internet, not an automatic right. If they catch you (which is way easier than you think), they can take away your Internet privileges in the house and school. If you call your parents stupid, than that just shows how stupid you are yourself. Parents buy you clothes, feed you, give you food, etc., and you call them stupid? Does love from your parents mean they are stupid?
Next time you try to get into Myspace from school, just think about it. Do I want to be caught?

Perhaps you should try to remember the difference between your and you’re, avoid comma splices, and shun sentence fragments. After all, you are in 11th grade.
I also am in 11th grade, and I chafe at many of the restrictions, network-related or otherwise, that I encounter at school.
Some contend that teenagers are in high school to learn, not to use social sites. What these well-meaning people often fail to realize is that many of those teenagers do not want to attend school. That set of young people attend school simply because attendance is required by law.
At this point, the aforementioned well-meaning folks will counter that these reluctant students ought to desire education. Unfortunately, they do not, and it is often impossible to change that. These lazy teenagers should be allowed to fail their classes, because the educational system will not repair their faulty attitudes.
Those who disagree may wish to obtain a copy of Screwtape Proposes a Toast, a brief tale in which C. S. Lewis discusses at length the flaws in the paradigm of universal education.
If this comment is not sufficient to provoke thought, then consider these facts:

I am a high school junior.
All of my current grades are A’s and B’s.
    I write computer programs.
I have won multiple national mathematics competitions.

The final fact to consider: I spend 6 hours daily online.
System administrators, please have mercy on us. If you do not, we will find it necessary to ignore you.
