Star Wars: Death Troopers

Death Troopers, a novel by Joe Schreiber will be released on Tuesday (October 13, 2009) and takes place just before “A New Hope”. What is it? A Star Wars horror book. That is something that I didn’t expect to ever see. I’m interested enough that I just might read it. Here’s the plot:

When the Imperial prison barge Purge breaks down in a distant, uninhabited part of space, its only hope seems to lie with a Star Destroyer found drifting, derelict and seemingly abandoned. But when a boarding party is sent to scavenge for parts, only half of them come back — bringing with them a horrific disease so lethal that within hours, nearly all aboard the Purge will die. And death is only the beginning.

For aboard the Star Destroyer, amid its vast creaking emptiness that isn’t really empty at all, the dead are rising, soulless, unstoppable, and unspeakably hungry.

What is awesome is that there are a number of fans that have come up with trailers for the book. This post has a large number of them, but here’s my favorite.

Pretty creepy.

Art: Dark Jedi

I’ve had some free time recently so decided to whip out my Wacom Intuos 3 tablet and see what I could drum up. I had a few commissioned drawings waiting on the wings – all three were character drawings of members of the Dark Jedi Brotherhood. As usual I have uploaded them to my Deviant Art gallery but I like to blog them as well. Here goes:

Solus Gar, Mando Jedi

Solus Gar, Mando Jedi

From Left to Right: Solus Gar, Mando Jedi (With Helmet); Talos d’Tana; Anubis

Solus Gar, Mando Jedi (With Helmet)Talos d'TanaAnubis

There is an issue on Talos that need correcting, and something’s odd with the proportioning on Anubis. I’d like to think that I’d fix them…but I probably won’t :D Anyhow, I’m pleased enough with the coloring to post them here.

It is Official! Knights of the Old Republic MMORPG

KOTOR Exciting news! BioWare‘s secret MMO project has been unveiled and my hopes are being realized! Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Massively Multi-Player Online Game is slated for release in 2009, and if all goes well, this MMO will deliver where Star Wars Galaxies failed.

BioWare has a track record of developing outstanding computer role-playing games including the recent XBox 360 game that took the world by storm, Mass Effect. That game company can weave a story that rivals the ability of Blizzard and I have high hopes that they will be able to deliver on this MMO. Only time will tell!

Star Wars Pronunciations

Star Wars Yeah, I’m a Star Wars fan. I’ve read over 50 Star Wars books, have played the CCG, the RPG – d6 AND d20, I’m a member of The Dark Jedi Brotherhood, and I do a lot of Star Wars art. As such, I encounter a number of Star Wars-y names/terms in writing that I make assumptions on their pronunciations. Then, days, months, or years later I find out that the actual pronunciation does not match mine and my brain implodes with frustration. In conversations with fellow Star Wars geeks, I find that many of them are wrong as well.

Art: Acheron “Briareos” d’Tana

Here’s a character sketch I did for a fellow member of the Dark Jedi Brotherhood. Acheron, modeled after Briareos Hecatonchires from the Anime film Appleseed, is depicted here with sub machine guns. Using a toy as a reference, I drew this with my Intuos3 tablet. Overall, I liked the way it came out!

Phrase Origin: Do Not Want

The phrase “Do not want” is one of endless amusement, now spoken often in my department when referring to anything bad or…well…unwanted. The phrase is brilliantly humorous and more so now that I know its accidental origin.

But where did this epic phrase come from? I found out yesterday that I had inadvertently blogged about the origin without even realizing it in titled Star Wars, Backstroke of the West. As I mentioned in my previous post, this was Star Wars Episode III recorded in theater, dubbed in Chinese, then subtitled in English off the Chinese dubbing…thus resulting in truly hilarious phrases, such as “Like, reach the man, Good good good let us counter-attacking.”; “The Presbyterian Church like enjoys you not.”; and of course: “Do not want”.

This gem that I’m focusing on in this post occurs when Anakin Skywalker – clad in his Darth Vader garb – learns of Padme’s death. In Episode III he yells: “Noooooooooooooooooooooooo!”, however, the skillfully done translation of the Chinese dubbing to English resulted in the beloved phrase: “Do not want.”

Beautiful. The world has seen this phrase’s real-world usefulness and has embraced it with open arms producing high-end content like the lolcats at I Can Has Cheez Burger:

Knights of the Old Republic MMORPG

I’m a huge fan of Star Wars and many many things Star Wars related (but not all). I was just reading The Flog and was alerted to this awesome news about BioWare‘s new MMORPG.

New MMORPG? Yup. And it turns out that it may very well be based on the Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) universe. Now that would be super sexy. Star Wars: Galaxies was a definite flop…but BioWare is a whole different caliber of game development. I have serious high hopes in their abilities and will be excitedly watching as information on this game becomes available! My fingers are crossed that the game actually is a Star Wars game. With EA Games’ recent acquisition of BioWare and Pandemic Studios (pdf), this seems like more of a possibility.

Drawing: Female Yuuzhan Vong Warrior

Female Yuuzhan Vong Warrior

Here’s a drawing of a female Yuuzhan Vong Warrior I did for the Dark Jedi Brotherhood using my Intuos 3 Wacom Tablet (You can click the image for a larger version). She has a very high sloping forehead, complete with tattoos, scarring, and topknot. She is clad in Vonduun Crab armor and wields an amphistaff.

Star Wars Christmas Special

Being a huge fan of Star Wars, I’ve often gobbled up chances to see and read many forms of entertainment media regarding that galaxy far, far away. The Star Wars Christmas special has eluded me for far too long…being a pre-Empire Strikes back flop, George Lucas has kept the special behind lock and key as much as possible. And rightly so…it was pretty dumb. BUT, it is Star Wars nostalgia and should be seen :) Check out what Wikipedia has for a description of the Holiday Special:

The Star Wars Holiday Special is important for being the first film-length Star Wars story after the original theatrical film, and for showing an expanded look at parts of that universe. The main focus of the holiday special is the Blockade of Kashyyyk. But for the most part, the plot serves as little more than a means to string together a series of musical numbers, celebrity cameos, and other variety-show acts. These include songs and comedy routines by such 1970s talents as Jefferson Starship, Diahann Carroll, Art Carney, Harvey Korman, and Bea Arthur. Easily the most notable segment is an animated cartoon featuring the pre-Empire Strikes Back debut of Boba Fett.

Luckily by digging around on YouTube I’ve managed to compile a series of snippets that form the entire special. For your enjoyment (and duty, if you happen to be a Star Wars fan):

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Series

SWTCW_CIV_Poster Announced at Comic-Con in 2005 and slotted for release in 2008, Star Wars: Clone Wars actual content is somewhat shrouded in mystery. All that has been confirmed is that the show will not be centered around the Skywalker family history, but rather have an episodic feel. George Lucas has stated that there will be episodes that focus on Stormtroopers and an episode that focuses on Kit Fisto. No matter the focus of the show…I’ll be watching.

I was happy to see that Lucasfilm had released their first teaser for the new CG Animated Series Star Wars: Clone Wars. The animation style is very reminiscent of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, a style that I find quite appealing. Sadly I’ve only been able to find the video on…I’ll post a YouTube version when it becomes available. Until then, check out the trailer here.

Fun With My Wacom

Orv Desktop Background

I’ve been having some serious fun as of late with my Intuos Art Pad. Honestly, I haven’t done much drawing since my Alien Sketch back in July. I didn’t realize how much I was missing ;) Well, ever since getting back into Star Wars, I’ve had an urge to do more drawings…well, actually drawings have been asked of me and I’ve happily obliged.

I’m pumped and ready to hone my skills even more…From these sketches I can tell that I’m pretty rusty but things will come around! Here are a few of the other drawings/crests I’ve done as of late:
