DotA v6.48 Released!

DotA 6.39b has been re-released with some needed patches that the first 6.39b version did not fix. If you’re looking to download it, you can get it here or here. If you have downloaded 6.39b from here or getdota.com prior to the 6th, you should delete your old file and re-download.

DotA 6.39b Released

UPDATE: 6.39b does not fix the Mac bug as assumed. It is suggested that you remain using 6.39!!!! This is right from the official DotA-Allstars site:

I had released a 6.39b patch a few hours ago to fix a mac bug, but due to a lack of Mac testers, it seems that the fix didn’t go so well. I recommend everyone keep using 6.39 as the latest official map. If you are a Mac tester, please contact me via getdota.com

DotA 6.39 Released!

Its been a long time coming, but Defense of the Ancients version 6.39 has been released! Download it here or here.

The notable changes are: there’s two new scourge heroes, a new end-game score board, and Sentinel/Scourge hero kill gold is now shared with the players! Here’s a list of all the updates:

  • Listed all the cooldowns for items and abilities
  • Added -rd (-randomdraft, similar to the style of play in a few inhouse leagues)
  • Added two new Scourge heroes
  • Added new functionality to replay files for leagues to more easily calculate and process game data
  • Added -showdeny/-hidedeny
  • Added new host commands “-weather snow”, “-weather rain” and for everyone “-weather off” (if it is turned off, it can’t be turned on again, to prevent spam and abuses)
  • -ma now shows hero level next to the name
  • Improved first middle Scourge tower area
  • Added a new endgame scoreboard to replace the inaccurate one that Warcraft 3 generates
  • Improved death text presentation
  • Added floating text to show you all the gold you get (including bonuses, not just the 100) from hero kills as well as tower kills. Please note that there has been no change to the gold you get, it is just being displayed as an added effect now.
  • Improved some ward vision areas for the Scourge team (thx Wedge[p])
  • Sentinel and Scourge hero kills now share the gold with the team instead of it being lost
  • Rewrote a lot of internals coding to allow for cleaner AI version implementation (in near future, the bot capability will be part of the regular map, useable in the every release)

Warcraft III: Age of Myths

bloatation I’m a huge fan of DotA…Warcraft III AoS maps are excellent LAN/Battle.net games that should be played by every Warcraft RTS fan at least once. Recently the group of guys that I play DotA on a periodic basis with decided to try out a new tower defense map. (which I have available for download here)

The map was Age of Myths, created by Clan TDW. The game is very similar to DotA in that there are two opposing sides, the goal is to destroy the other’s base, and each side spawns creeps that follow a specific path and attack anything in their way. Each player chooses a hero that has an allotment of abilities that add to the deadliness of the game and can buy items (Here’s the official list) to augment those abilities. Thats about as similar as it gets.

Here are some good/interesting differences:

  • AoM is a 12 player game (DotA is 10 player)
  • The map has an uber-zoom-out…this is awesome
  • The map has the ability to trigger re-matches where teams switch sides and pick new heroes
  • Bases are in the top left and bottom right of the map
  • Rebalance mode. If there is a leaver, the players can request a rebalance which will sort the players into a fairly balanced match-up
  • The map sports 4 lanes rather than 3
  • The map sports custom models
  • There’s some funny custom sounds
  • There are 16 heroes in the game
  • Maximum hero level is 20
  • Spell effects are MUCH more elaborate than DotA
  • There are categorized items that can only be carried/purchased by specific hero types
  • Players can purchase builders to repair buildings
  • Additional troops can be purchased to help push a lane
  • Like DotA, you accrue money over time and with each kill, however, when you get a hero kill you gain a spirit point. These spirit points (or kill points) can be used to purchase items that cannot be purchased with money.
  • One of my favorite things is: All abilities for every hero are controled with Q, W, E, R, and T. There is no need to hunt around and memorize a different short-cut key set for each hero

But, with all those cool features, there are some drawbacks:

  • Its may be a bit unbalanced…for example: the caster classes are the only ones that can buy an item (and its cheap!) that allows them to teleport to anywhere on the map where a friendly structure exists.
  • The map is a bit big…I’m not sure the size is quite necessary. I may be singing a different tune when I play with more people.

All-in-all it makes for a fun game. If you are a fan of DotA, I’d highly suggest giving this one a shot as it shows real promise. Its a blast to play and has some sweet features. I guarantee you that my friends and I will be playing AoM a lot more! Oh and if you’re curious, here’s a list of heroes available:

DotA WTF

dota With the release of DotA v6.36b, a new game mode has been added that, frankly, scares me a bit. This mode is enabled by the blue player typing: -wtf …at which point all hell breaks loose.

-Wtf mode removes mana costs and cooldowns of all spells and abilities. Crazy. I’ve tested this mode out once with Prophet and happily walked up the field creating stream after stream of treants (units the Prophet can control) and zerged my opponent’s base.

The mode is fun, overpowered and hugely imbalanced…but oh its bound to be a sweet, deadly game. Definately worthy of one -wtf mode game a night when my friends and I get together to play on Thursdays.

* Fixed -vr to random inside the voted hero vs hero set, so for example, blue/pink don’t always get the first one listed anymore. Don’t confuse this with the 10 heroes being randomized, only the order which they are assigned once the lineup is voted on. This removes the voting bias that previously existed in informal games
* Fixed a Clinkz Searing/Windwalk exploit
* Fixed Perseverance undo ability and Reality from triggering Essence Aura

There have been some interesting additions/changes. Of particular interest to me are:

  • You can now set the player slots to Computer to reduce the starting gold if you are playing in less than 5v5 (so you don’t have to start with 3500 if you don’t want to)
  • Bonus gold is given to the allies of the tower killer (even if creeps kill it)
  • Perseverance can now be broken up into its components by clicking on it
  • It seems they’ve added a new mode (-voterandom, which is like -allrandom except you get to vote on which hero combinations are used).

After extensive playtesting on two new items, i decided that that it was better for the game to put them on hold rather then rush them in. I’m sorry to those who were waiting for it, but its for the best. Hopefully we will see them in the near future as well as other new content.

Warcraft III: Tech Wars

Tech Wars Defense of the Ancients (DotA) is a sweet two-team game for up to 10 players where each player controls a hero and fights off creeps and pushes to destroy their opponent’s base. Well, recently a few of my friends and I have found a different game that can be just as exciting but games last about 15 to 20 minutes rather than the 1 to 1.5 hour games of DotA. The game?

Tech Wars

In Tech Wars, you have to build barracks, factories and gyrocopter pads that automatically spawn units and send them at your enemy! Each building has upgrades that will upgrade the units this building spawns. At the center of the map there are different technologies that you can capture, and as long as you control them you will be able to upgrade to even better units and buildings. You also have turrets that you can build and upgrade to protect your base. So whatever you do, don’t lose your base, and use whatever you can to protect it! Be the first team to wipe out the other side to be victorious!

Defense of the Ancients (DotA) AI

dota DotA is a great game with many game options. If you are new to this blessed game and wish to expand your knowledge and/or practice, your only real option is to play on Battle.net with human teammates and opponents due to the lack of Artificial Intelligence built in. If you suck, you’re bound to face ridicule for the entirety of a game…which is enough to drive potentially good players from ever playing again.

Enter DotA AI. Shortly after a new version of DotA gets released, its equivalent version with AI is pushed out for download by the powers that be. I’ve played with AI only once and the bots seem to be pretty decent. They build their own items, team up and attempt to kill opponents, plus anything else you’d expect to see a player do. Pretty sexy. So, if you find yourself sucking and in need of practice…or you need your 10 person DotA match with no leavers, check out DotA AI.

What perplexes me is why they don’t build AI into the game as-is.
