Warcraft III: DotA Allstars (Defense of the Ancients)
I was one of the many gamers addicted to World of Warcraft a few months ago. I have recently kicked the habit and have headed back to my Blizzard roots (well, more like my Blizzard upper trunk/lower branches) and have dusted off my Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne cds. But its not to play Warcraft III…
DotA Allstars is my draw to those Warcraft III discs. DotA is a home-made mod for Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne that has taken Battle.net by storm over the past few years. Here’s the official DotA site’s description:
DotA stands for “Defense of the Ancients”, it’s a free mod for Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne. The purpose of the game is to defend your Ancient and try to destroy the opponents Ancient. The ancients are located deep in both bases, which are located at the top right and bottom left corners of the map. There are over 70 heroes that differ greatly in play style. Each of these heroes have been carefully designed so they are both balanced and unique. The map is updated frequently, sometimes to add new heroes, fix bugs or to make a balance update. The strategies possible with DotA are pretty much endless, choosing the wrong item and hero combination can mean the difference between a win and a loss for your team. The gameplay in DotA Allstars can be classified as relatively fast because as the game progresses any small mistake you make can be fatal to the overall team.
This WCIII mod has picked up enough following that Blizzard - Warcraft III’s creator - hosted a DotA Allstars tournament at their last Blizzcon…thats saying something! :) The mod has been well developed over the years and is currently in the hands of IceFrog (some dude’s alias) and he’s doing some good things. The game seems fairly balanced and new heroes are added every once in a while. I think the real draw to the game is how different each one can be…with 77 heroes and a crap ton of items you can totally suck out one game then turn around and own the next! The key is to find that happy medium and slowly work towards owning every time. Needless to say…I’m not there yet.
The way the game works is this: there are two teams - the Scourge and the Sentinel - consisting of up to 5 players each that start at the top right and the bottom left of the map respectively. Each player chooses a Hero to control, level up, and attack with. The goal is to advance on the opposing team and destroy their Ancient (a large structure in each base). Along the way, players are pitted against a constant barrage of spawned creeps (which originate from the opposing side’s base), enemy towers, other players’ heroes, and world creeps. To aid in the advancement in levels up to 25, players can purchase items from various shops and combine many of them into stronger items.
The game is fast, fun, and addictive…and boy can it piss you off at times. The average game lasts about 45-60 minutes so you play for a couple of hours you can try out a few different heroes in a single sitting.
During the summer, a group of friends - Al, Bude, Keith, Nate, Ryan, Zach, and I - gather together once a week to either LAN it up or play on Battle.net. We stock up on caffeine, chips, and subs, then play until the wee hours of the morning. Good times. Bude and Nate are our best players so are never allowed on the same team…I’m a fairly sucky player so I think I’ll start doing a little strat research and playing more Battle.net games on my own. My goal: To get better so I can start pissing my friends off because I’m good rather than pissing them off because I suck :). We’ll see if I get there…
If you have any interest in trying DotA out, you can get the latest map from here or GetDotA.com. Don’t bother trying to join games without the newest map…you’ll get booted faster than the game prep UI loads.

Create a folder called “Downloads” (if its not already created) and place the dota file in there. You should be good from there.

Well, I like DotA yes, I am not the greatest, but I can hold my own. If any of you think that you LOVE this game, then, I will tell you to stop playing now and go out and ride a bike, find a girlfriend/boyfriend but please, dont play DotA for 4 or 5 hours straight, do you want to loose your cerebral functions? 1 or 2 hours is okay, but, guys/girls, please, dont hurt yourself! (P.s. Who do yuo think is the best hero? I would say the Enchantress since, if you attack her, you can’t attack (effectively) again for a while with ehr Untouchable skill! Try it, she can Pawn the things with massive health or, at higher levels, Rohan quite easily, she can rip through fast heros since, the farther away they get from her, the more damage she does! Also, her healing skill is pretty damn cool) Anyway try not to Liquify your brains! Just a friendly word of Warning

You can play free if you own WCIII and the expansion. Just open the game and go to Battle.net, create an account, and play.

Hes one of the best pushers with his heal and mechanism as his fisrt item. 1st he owns avernus’s ulti w/ his. Just dont let it go under 400. When its at 450-500 use ur ulti nd its surly a kill. 2nd, the heal/attack things do 200 each at lvl3 AND 100 heal. Avernus’s sheild protects 275? lol 2 attack things nd its dead. Then the dmge it give when it pops is regenerated with the other 4-5 heals of 100 health each. It owns. ON TOP OF THAT ANOTHER ABILITY IS 36% OF ATTACK WITHIN AN AOE OF 450 IS DECREASED. THATS OVER 1/3 OF AVERNUS’s ATTACK. IF HE HAS 200 ATTACK, 1/3 of 200 IS ABOUT 125. THATS &% DMGE REDUCTION. ONE MORE THING.
Avernus’s frosmourne is for attacks. Since necro isnot using attacks to kill him only the heal/dmge things+ulti IT DOESNT EFFECT HIM.

Bounty Vs. Avernus —–> surely avernus will be ownage bec. of its skill is all anti attacker… But Avernus Vs. All Intellegence Combo Hero(like–> Lion, Lina, Necro and etc…) for there special attack can kill avernus w/o using avernus’ ultimate w/c can automatically activated below 400. But also, avernus can encounter w/ it! If ur using ur MIND and if u feel that there gonna get combo u, u can activate Avernus’ ulti w/o passing below 400 so that u can escape there combo….So all of you should remember that DotA Players Win in this fact!
–> They are friends so they can cooperate w/ each other
–> There is no greedy in a team or there is greedy in the enemy team.
–> In -ar: Your hero are set-up being a combo hero and you cooperate well w/ your team mates!
–> In -ap: When your combo in your team works effectively..
–> And especially when there is a Pro Player that farms well and his teammates know how to def well.. Then After w/ it the Pro Player w/ his items more nicer than yours will become the leader in the team to Win!Thats All!!!!!!!! Lol to you again!

Posted: Mar 6th, 2007 at 7:25 pmReply to this comment.i have played with guys who r freakin’ monsters at DoTa, and i have gotta say that every hero has advantages.. i prefer Zeus because his lvl6 does damamge to all heroes, not just one.. but thats just my opinion.. i also like Lich, Dwarven Sniper and Sand King az well..

here’s some tips for the heroes:
–terrorblade– use dagon first, once u hit level 6, uL b hunting for instant kill
–how to spawn a million creeps in a single lane???

I’m very new to this dota all star and I’m enjoying playing it, but what I’m really in need is a good fren who is well know about most of the great heros for victory . I’ll be thankful for u if u say me the 5 heroes over dota all star that u think are the greatest of all and please also mention the ‘ITEMS’ for each heroes to be purchased and the priority of the powers to be updated in each levels of the heros.Thanking you !

DOTA is the greatest game ever created. When will someone take this game formula and create a standalone game based solel off of this concept? If hey don’t screw it up it would sell like gangbusters.
