Subverting MySpace and Facebook Blocks With Proxies

In November I blogged about Pope John XXIII Regional High School in Sparta New Jersey and their forcing of students to stop using sites like MySpace, Xanga, and Facebook. Over the past few months I have seen a number of comment come in regarding…well…not threats from schools, but blocking of such sites by educational institutions. Now, its important to note that the blocking of these social sites seem to be localized to Elementary and High Schools, not higher education institutions.

Blocking social sites like this has been met with heavy opposition by those users that are directly affected by such blocks. Lets face it. The web is extremely social and is growing more so as time progresses. My friend, Zach mentions (via our mutual friend Casey):

There are 3,975 registered [Facebook] users at Plymouth State University. Like the other schools on [Facebook], over 60% of them log in every 24 hours.

This type of following is not localized to just universities. The hordes of students frequenting these sites is truly amazing. To get an idea about how much High School students seem to be attached to social sites such as this, I’ll bring up the following article I found at WOAI via Wikipedia.

All but 400 of the 3,000 students at San Antonio Warren High School either didn’t show up or walked out of class today due to threats against the school posted on a popular teen web site, 1200 WOAI news reported today.

“About mid morning today we were able to confirm that the web site ‘MySpace-dot-com’ allowed several students to post threatening messages on it’s web site, messages threatening Warren High School,” Pascual Gonzales of the Northside School District said. “This message said two boys were planning to show up at school with guns.”

That example is not only a testament to the numbers of users, but both the benefits and the the drawbacks of such software. MySpace and similar sites help fuel the passing of information and breaks down social barriers…which is a great thing! But what the schools and many parents are seeing is that many people feel secure in the sites’ use and tend to post fairly revealing bits of information (e.g. provocative photos, under-aged drinking, etc). Schools attempt to stop this kind of behavior by forcefully blocking the sites. Wrong move, it teaches the students nothing. It causes them to continue to participate in posting risque information, blissfully ignorant of the damage it can cause to their reputation and/or the danger it poses to them due to stalkers. To subvert the blocks schools create, students are resorting to the use of Proxies.

These proxies allow users to browse sites under the guise of other sites’ addresses. Since the onset of schools blocking sites, there have been an eruption on proxy sites; free, signup required, ad fueled, etc. If you are curious what is being used by students, here are some that a few have posted here at Borkweb:

There are a crap ton more out there…simply search for myspace proxy or facebook proxy.

If you are student reading this (or anyone else for that matter), be careful what you post. Whatever goes on sites like that, its not closed to the outside world…It’s extremely public information. If you aren’t a student, well, its important to know that attempting to force students in a direction by brute force, it’ll cause them to long for it even more. Instead…educate, don’t dictate.

Another odd thing that seems to be heavily searched is hacking facebook and hacking myspace. A spin off from the heavy usage of such software and the goals of mischievous to deface/defame others’ profile. This I just don’t get.

I think that MySpace pisses people off because no one likes to think of their children as independent sexual beings. Teenagers are exactly that, and they want their privacy. MySpace provides a forum in which they express themselves and their adventures beyond the confines of parental supervision. Before MySpace, it was plain-old IM, but that medium really isn’t suited to community-building.

Instead of doing the good old tactic of clamping down on external targets, parents ought to be paying attention to their children, talking to them, and spending time with them.

Imagine that - parenting your children. It’s so wild, it just might work…

Interesting that they dont include the Livejournal/Greatest Journal groups in that. I know plenty of people with LJ’s who also use Myspace and Facebook AND Xanga (though most are in college, there are some HS’ers).

I think its rediculas for everyone to freak out about myspace. People are screaming about little girls being kidnapped and raped and crap..I mean, I don’t want anyone to think I’m heartless but no one would find them unless they told the person where there were and all that good stuff. My parents harp on and on about the internet being a privillage and not a right..well, with every privillage comes resposiblity, right? If you’re going to give out your full name, address and serial number, you’re pretty much inviting people to come and kidnap you. Maybe there wouldn’t be so many damn internet-preditors or wtf ever people call them these days if people didn’t make it so damn easy for everyone. Gosh..now the rest of us are suffering because some stupid parent let their thirteen yearold daughter online and didn’t teach her before hand that she shouldn’t give out her name and stuff. I mean..good god..who does that?

i think that parents dont really pay attention to what really goes on when we’re really on myspace. they only pay attention to whats ont hte news. there are xbillion amount of people on myspace and 4 of them got kidnapped (*gasp*). no one realizes that if all of the good things, no the normal things that go on at myspace.com would NOT make good news, so myspace has a bad rep because some people were stupid and got raped or kidnapped. i dont mean to be mean or anything, but who the hell puts their real name and adress on the net? i think that they need a rude awakening.

I had a myspace account and my parents watched the news one day and it just so happends that these crazy people related a murder to a young girls myspace profile. So they grounded me for having one and i had to delete my profile. It sounds kinda lame that these adults just atuomatically assume that just because we have a myspace acount that some sick freak is gonna come kill us. It’s good to be safe but how the hell do you think that your gonna be the 1 out of 20 million people thats gonna get killed? Myspace is a good thing if you make it a good thing…Be safe, dont give your info. but go ahead and have fun. There’s nothing wrong with that.

I’m a library aide at a middle/high school library. We didn’t block Myspace and Xanga because we’re “freaking out”, we blocked it because these kids are so certain of their “right” to use Myspace that they waste class time, threaten each other online, keep kids who actually have work to do from getting on a computer, and tie up our server.
Myspace is something you do on your OWN time, on your OWN computers.

[...] Schools across the country are cracking down on student computer use; blocking social sites and proxy servers. Many schools are perfectly within their right to prevent teenagers from frequenting sites like MySpace, Facebook and Xanga while using school hardware. In all actuality, there is no real need for students to be on such social sites at school when it could impede on studying and perhaps pose a danger to the student (internet predators). [...]

two. parents who get all “myspace is bad blah blah blah” are stupid, overprotected, and retahhds that just need to shut up. and if your parents don’t want you to have a myspace; then you shouldn’t have a myspace.

three. you shouldn’t be trying to get on myspace at school.

Great blurb on myspace. One thing that students should note is that Prospective future employers now look at myspace and facebook to see if any applicants have any embarrasing information about them there. So students please dont put those keg party photos on your websites!!!. You may be passed up for a great job because of your stupidness.

You guys suck. You really aren’t as smart as you think you are, just deal with it. You always think your so great, you aren’t. Stop acting like adults don’t know anything about social life these days. They’ve been to school already, they know. Sure, they might not have used or had computers and modern technology, but they still faced a lot of peer pressure from friends and authority from adults. They have experience
You always complain that adults don’t understand, and that you need freedom and individuality. Lets take this for example. If a school wants you to wear uniforms, you guys complain that it takes away your individuality and freedom. Does it really? No. You can wear your own clothes outside of school, but when you go to school, you go to school to learn. Not to go on Myspace or Facebook or Friendster, whatever site you use. Not to complain about the rules. Not to get around the security by proxying your way to Myspace. You go to school to learn. Not to get your cellphones confiscated, and then complain and bad-mouth the adults. To learn.
You may think I am some old idiot that doesn’t understand this generation of internet-users. I am actually going to 11th grade. I have used Myspace before. I have gotten around school computer security before. I am no stranger to the Internet. If you lie to the registration form, you are only lying to yourself. Saying your 30 when your birthdate is on your profile, and it clearly shows your not 30 not only mens your lying, but your stupid.
Parents do this for your own good. You may think that they are blocking your freedom and are stupid, but they aren’t. It is a privilege to use the Internet, not an automatic right. If they catch you (which is way easier than you think), they can take away your Internet privileges in the house and school. If you call your parents stupid, than that just shows how stupid you are yourself. Parents buy you clothes, feed you, give you food, etc., and you call them stupid? Does love from your parents mean they are stupid?
Next time you try to get into Myspace from school, just think about it. Do I want to be caught?

well, hun, I go to myspace to talk to my friends, NOT to gossip. Gossiping is for prissy brats who have no REAL social life. Most parents these days don’t even know the half of it, with all that artificial insimulation and stuff, they could have kids at age 50; EXAMPLE:: my parents could smoke in school. RULES CHANGE.

Yes, uniforms and ect. WOULD take away from our INDIVIDUALITY. They FORCE us to go to school and treat us like prisoners, we should at least be able to express ourselves.

Not everyone gets love, food, and shelter from there parents. That luxury is a privilege as well. we myspace at home so how is not letting us at school stoping anything?

we most deffinately have more experience than our parents in this area.
AND were at a computer so we obviously have some free time.

and its not IRONIC/ANYTHING that someone got killed/raped that has a myspace. I mean common guys, someone gets killed or raped like every 5 minutes. Just because they have a myspace, doesnt mean thats why or how it happend.

I like how lauren, the library aid, put it. But im in computer class and were aloud to serf when we are done with our work, and i am, so thats the only reason i’d like to get on.

No, Uniforms wouldn’t take away individuality, they give you something decent to wear. No more wasting time choosing what to wear to school. Plus, they are a good option for low-income families, since the uniforms are cheap to make. Besides, there is always time to display your individuality (Outside school is that time!) But when you are in school, the point isn’t individuality, it is education.

Just face it, your not going to get past the myspace blocks. Thats probably the most protected site on the web [at school].

Why don’t you get a life; arm yourself with knowledge. Knowing how to make a myspace layout is not going to help you when an A-BOMB is hurling towards you during World War III.

I’m assuming all of you are in high school? [correct me if i'm wrong] So surely xanga, myspace, or livejournal does not matter as much to you as getting out of this control center.

another would to go to google and type in the web slot “how to get to myspace from school” look at those links and if it wont let you than click the cached button and it should let you…..

another would be to go to http://www.schoolboredom.com….. its a good site…

if anyone knows any other things besides this then plz tell me….. my schoool locks all back doors to myspace

This is sooo STUPID.i have no clue why we cant use myspace at school. The only girls that are getting kidnapped and raped are the stupid ones who let it happen. Its not fair to be punished for stupid sluts who lead these creeps on and the ones who give out their personal info.

My only computer, which was a slow and old lap top just recently broke down. I no longer have internet acess and the only time i have to check my myspace is at school. Lucky me, myspace just got blocked from our school computers. There are proxies that can be used to get around blocked myspace but I relly don’t want to risk my highschool carrer. Shouldn’t there atleast be acess to the sites you want to go to, but still some sort of blockage from sites like these during class?

You people who are overly obsessed with myspace, are literally stupid. If you spend as much time as you do on MySpace leaving comments, reading and commenting others on Myspace, and doing that in school, you’d be guinesses. But I suspose not, your all too busy what stupid ass left you what, and or who you gonna go meet today on the net and possibly get raped. All some scumbag needs is where you live, your phone number or possibly your IP address and your basically screwed. It’s funny how pathetic you all are over it. You all act like your gonna die without it.

Hahaha, even if you get a hold of a proxy that actually works, you still cannot subvert the myspace blocks. I will not let you log on even if you are smart enough to get to the login screen.

We have # ID’s at school and guess who else does… Prisoners.

Hahahaha I didnt mean to turn this into lecture 101. I was just telling you myspace WONT work.

Hey everyone. I’d just like to say that most proxies prevent you from logging onto myspace, but I’ve found one that really works. Everyone in my school uses it and the administration hasn’t wized up yet, so we log on daily. Its located at
    Http://vtunnel.com
It really works. I’m logged in now, and doing fine.
